Areas of Qualification

The Selma City Schools’ Department of Special Education promotes opportunities for students to participate in educational and extracurricular activities designed to facilitate maximum student achievement. A full range of services, meeting the needs of all identified students' grade Prek-12, special education and gifted, is offered in all schools in the Selma City School System.

Special Education Services includes qualified Special Education Teachers and Paraprofessionals, Speech/Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Board Certified Behavior Analysts, School Psychometrists and other related service providers.  Together we plan and provide educational programs for students with disabilities in partnership with general education staff, administrators and parents.

We nurture individuals, who value themselves and others and provide an educational foundation that enables students to have the ability to think, communicate, create and apply their unique learning experiences throughout their lifetime.

We believe that parents are a valuable and essential part of the educational process and that their aspirations for and insights about their child’s program are an integral component as we plan together for their child’s educational success.

Special Education

Special education is not a “place” rather, it is a set of services. The district’s goal is to partner with families regarding the individual needs of children. The Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the federal legislation that helps guide school teams and families in the qualification of students and the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). SCS has a continuum of services to meet the needs of our diverse student population.

Intellectually Gifted

Intellectually gifted children and youth are those who perform at or have demonstrated the potential to perform at high levels in academic or creative fields when compared with others of their age, experience or environment. These children and youth require services not ordinarily provided by the regular school program. Children and youth possessing these abilities can be found in all populations, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor. Gifted students may be found within any race, ethnicity, gender, economic class, or nationality, In addition, some students with disabilities may be gifted . Selma City School System shall prohibit discrimination against any student on the above bases with respect to his/her participation in the gifted program.

How Does A Student Become Eligible for Gifted Services?
Procedures are in place to ensure that students who exhibit gifted characteristics are referred for gifted services. These include: public notice, equity to ensure that efforts are made to identify students among all populations and socio-economic groups, Second Grade Child Find and standard referrals made by teachers, counselors, administrators and parents/guardians. Parents must be informed when students are referred.
