Welcome to Selma City Schools


I extend greetings and appreciation for your support of the Selma City School System. The past twenty-two months of my tenure as superintendent has been an arduous labor of love for the success and well-being of the children in Selma. Though the school system
has been faced with many challenges, great strides have been made towards creating a  highly-effective school system that will make the entire Selma community proud and cause the city to flourish. Evidence of improvement can be found throughout the system. For example, S. P. Kingston Elementary School was removed from the failing school list as a result of the hard work and dedication of the faculty, staff, students, and school partners. Throughout the system, schools are focusing on district priories that were established prior to the start of school. The priorities are also a part of every school’s continuous improvement plan. As a result of unified efforts, students are making significant progress as described below.

1. Improve Literacy and Mathematic Skills

  • Kindergarten through 12th Grade students have read over 17,000 electronic books via myON Reading Pilot since November 2016.
  • The library circulation rate (books checked out) for the system has increased 79%.
  • Twenty-nine percent (29%) increase in proficiency on the first semester Scantron Achievement Series assessments in ELA/Reading among students in Grades 3-5.
  • Fifty-three percent (53%) increase in mathematics proficiency on the semester Scantron Achievement Series assessments in mathematics among students in Grades 3-5.

2. Develop Social/Emotional Intelligence 

  • A formalized advisory/character education program was implemented in grades Kindergarten through 12 as a means to equip students with the soft skills they need to regulate their own behavior and focus their attention on choices that will lead to positive life outcomes. As a result, there has been a 41% decline in out of school suspensions.

3. Improve Student and Staff Attendance Rate 

  • Thirty-four (34) staff members were recognized for having perfect attendance for the first semester of school.
  • There was a .20% increase in average daily attendance (Grades 1-12) for the first semester of school. (2015-2016 ~ ADM 95.21% and 2016-2017 ~ ADM 95.41%)

I am deeply appreciative for the concerted efforts of the Selma City School family and community partners for making these achievements possible.
